Within it's short history,\r\nthe Quartet has appeared at several\r\nimportant early-music festivals. At\r\nthe 2019 York Early Music\r\nInternational Young Artists\r\nCompetition, they were awarded a\r\nplace in the prestigious\r\nEEEMERGING+ professional\r\ndevelopment scheme for young\r\nEuropean ensembles. With this\r\ncollection of rarely heard 18thcentury quartets from Italy, the\r\nButter Quartet makes a thrilling debut\r\non record. The individuality of each\r\ncomposer is accentuated by their\r\nmutual juxtaposition. In their booklet\r\nessay for the album, the Quartet\r\nmembers recount combing libraries\r\nfor early quartets which have been\r\novershadowed by Haydn's mastery of\r\nthe genre. All of the composers\r\nfeatured in Scintilla were famous\r\nviolin virtuosi, with the exception of\r\nBoccherini who was a cellist. Their\r\nwork as performers was inseparable\r\nfrom the music they composed.\r\nItalian galant music and performers\r\nwere characterized by gorgeous tone,\r\noperatic sensibilities, and elegant\r\nornamentation.\r\nAn E flat major Quartet by Gaetano Pugnani\r\n(1731-1798) retains traces of Baroque\r\ngrammar to it's phrasing, while a C minor\r\nQuartet by Boccherini (1743-1805) is marked\r\nby the surges of pathos that belong to the\r\nkey signature as reinterpreted by Haydn,\r\nMozart and Beethoven. Maddalena Sirmen\r\n(1745-1818) wrote six quartets of which No.5\r\nin F major is a remarkably close-woven and\r\nreflective work, hardly a display piece in the\r\ntradition of her teacher Tartini but touched\r\nthroughout with the spirit of subtle\r\ninnovation we associate with Haydn. Finally,\r\nthe C major Quartet of Felice Giardini (1716-\r\n1796) is distinguished by an unusually rich\r\nviola part which may arise from the\r\ncircumstances of it's composition in London,\r\nwhere the composer played his violin with\r\nboth the painter Thomas Gainsborough and\r\nthe Prince of Wales, who became King\r\nGeorge IV\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alliance Entertainment","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":49642278191404,"sku":"5028421974071","price":14.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0863\/2257\/7708\/files\/4344108-3187716.jpg?v=1724314895","url":"https:\/\/joseyrecords.com\/products\/butter-quartet-boccherini-giardini-pugnani-sirmen-scintilla-early-italian-string-quartets-deluxe-cd","provider":"Josey Records","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
