The Romance in C Op.42 (1903) was\r\ncomposed during a difficult phase in the\r\ncomposer's life caused by excessive\r\nalcohol consumption, which prompted\r\nhim to leave Helsinki and move with his\r\nwife near to Lake Tuusula, where he\r\ncould dedicate himself to composition\r\nfar from the temptations of the Finnish\r\ncapital. The piece is divided into short\r\nsections in which the melodic ideas\r\narise from fragments of the octatonic,\r\nor diminished, scale of alternating\r\nwhole and half steps supported by\r\ndissonant harmonies that add further\r\ntonal instability.\r\nSamuel Barber's typically inspired\r\nmelodic vein emerges from the very\r\nbeginning in his Serenade Op.1 for String\r\nQuartet or String Orchestra, dating from 1928.\r\nFeaturing chromaticism's and dissonant\r\npassages, a duality is established between a\r\nfirst, rhythmic and impetuous thematic idea\r\nand a lyrical melody. The final movement\r\nbrings greater serenity and joy through the\r\nchoice of a major mode and the adoption of a\r\ngraceful and leaping theme whose fragments\r\npass in counterpoint between one voice and\r\nanother.\r\nWhen Benjamin Britten composed his Simple\r\nSymphony Op.4 he was just 20 years old, and\r\nhe describes the idea in an introduction to the\r\nscore: 'This \"Simple Symphony\" is entirely\r\nbased on material from works which the\r\ncomposer wrote between the ages of nine\r\nand twelve [.]. Although the development of\r\nthese themes is in many places quite new,\r\nthere are large stretches of the work which\r\nare taken bodily from the early pieces - save\r\nfor the re-scoring for strings'. In effect, Britten\r\nextrapolates eight themes from his juvenile\r\ncompositional production, associates two of\r\nthem with each movement and creates a\r\nstructural mix between the four movements of\r\na Classical symphony, the dances of the\r\nBaroque suite and popular folklore.\r\nDa pacem Domine is a Gregorian style piece\r\ncomposed by Arvo Pärt in 2004 to\r\ncommemorate the victims of the Madrid\r\nterrorist attacks on trains, which killed 192\r\npeople. Pärt first composed a version for four\r\nvoices on the text of a Latin prayer. That\r\natmosphere of contemplation is preserved in\r\nhis subsequent edition for chamber orchestra.\r\nThe modal composition, in D Dorian, conveys\r\nthe feeling of a search for calmness, a request\r\nfrom man to God for peace in the wake of such\r\na tragedy. Scattered appearances of B flat and\r\nthe leading tone (C sharp) mitigate and add a\r\npiquancy to the modal atmosphere.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Alliance Entertainment","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":49641130000684,"sku":"5028421970578","price":14.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0863\/2257\/7708\/files\/4344103-3187711.jpg?v=1724309561","url":"https:\/\/joseyrecords.com\/products\/orchestra-orfeo-sibelius-britten-barber-part-romanza-music-for-strings-cd","provider":"Josey Records","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
