This principle exists because titles are generally considered too short and lacking in the originality required for copyright protection. Copyright law is designed to protect ""original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium."" However, for a work to qualify, it must exhibit a minimal level of creativity and originality (by the way, minimal level of creativity and originality is The Phantom Surfers' motto).
