The Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern was founded in 1951 by Emmerich Smola for the Southwest Radio. In 2007 the ensemble merged with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrucken, and the combined group is still performing and recording to this day.
