Born in Poland in 1876, Hofmann became a US citizen during World War I and mesmerized audiences with his astounding technical ability throughout the 1920 's, 30 's and 40 's at concerts in the US and Europe. He released commercial recordings beginning in 1903 and made some of the earliest recordings of classical music for Thomas Edison.
