詳細:ピアノによる短い導入部で作品が始まり、ライオンの咆哮を思わせるような音が響き、その後、エキゾチックな雰囲気を漂わせる王家の行進が始まります。作曲家が可能な限り自然に忠実に、雌鶏と雄鶏が演奏され、続いて野生のロバが予想外の素早さで動き、それとは対照的にのろのろと歩くカメが、可能な限りゆっくりとしたスピードでカンカンを踊り、ところどころで足を踏み外します。象は、ベルリオーズの非常に不適切なシルフのバレエを引用する場面で、当然ながらコントラバスによって表現されます。その後、ピアノだけがカンガルーの気まぐれな跳躍を模倣し、水族館を想起させます。耳の長い人々、批評家たちは、甲高い笛とロバの鳴き声で表現され、ピアノとクラリネットがカッコウを呼び寄せ、続いてフルートの助けを借りて鳥小屋の残りのメンバーがやって来ます。ロシアの作曲家セルゲイ・プロコフィエフは、1936年に子供たちにオーケストラの楽器を紹介するために「ピーターと狼」を作曲しました。彼は二人の息子を連れてモスクワ児童音楽劇場の公演を見に行き、それがこの種の作品の可能性を彼に思い起こさせたのです。弦楽器で表現された少年ピーターは、禁断の地である草原で遊んでいます。フルートで表現された鳥は木の上で歌い、アヒルはオーボエで池を泳ぎ、猫はクラリネットで登場し、鳥を高い枝へと送り出します。ファゴット奏者のピーターの祖父は、少年に外に出るなと警告するが、その間にフレンチホルン奏者の狼が牧草地に現れ、アヒルを追いかけて丸呑みにし、木の上にいた猫と鳥を包囲する。ピーターは鳥に狼の注意をそらすように言い、その間に自分はロープで狼を捕まえる。すると、太鼓の音に銃を向けた猟師たちが近づき、壮大な行列で狼を動物園へ運び去る。アヒルはまだ狼の腹の中でガーガー鳴き、祖父はまだ文句を言っている。
