Why Are We Still Buying Deftones Records In 2024?

Deftones, one of the most beloved progressive metal bands from the 90’s, consistently sells out at Josey. Not to mention, the band continues to headline festivals, despite not putting out a record since 2020. How can a band’s stamina last almost 30 years later? Let’s talk about Deftones’ steady popularity in mainstream music, as well as their musical influence and longevity in the vinyl game.

Like many metal bands from the late 90’s, Deftones has had somewhat of a resurgence in popularity in the past few years. This could be attributed to the younger generation discovering bands via Tiktok, but it would be remiss to not give credit where it’s due, in the sense that longtime metal fans are bound for life. With newer and younger fans, coupled with the preexisting lifelong followers, Deftones has continued to remain relevant.

Deftones’ first album, “Around The Fur” (1997), is a quintessential 90’s metal record. Bordering on an almost post-hardcore sound, Deftones cemented themselves as a group that could withstand the throes of time. Their sophomore album “White Pony” (2000) launched them further into mainstream success. The whacky, almost nonsensical tracks names are but a compliment to the albums musical vastness. Since then, Deftones has released 6 albums, some of which vacillate between alternative metal and starry shoegaze. Whatever the style may be, Deftones does not disappoint.

There is also something to be said about Deftones’ effect on modern post-rock bands. Many newer bands are trying to replicate the “Deftones Sound”, a complex balance between metal and shoegaze. Loathe, Fleshwater, and Glare, are a few acts that come close to hitting the nail on the head. Even Deftones own Chino Moreno has taken inspiration and injected it into his (semi) latest side projects, Team Sleep and Crosses. Needless to say, Deftones has musically reverberated into many facets of modern day music, while still holding their own.

Deftones vinyl is consistently bought out and restocked at Josey Records. While these are newer pressings, it delineates how much of a growing and consistent fanbase the band has. Not to mention, original copies of various Deftones vinyl can cost anywhere upwards of $800 on Discogs. The point is, Deftones has etched themselves as a necessity for vinyl collectors and metalheads alike. So, why are we still buying their vinyl in 2024? Their musical genius warrants eternal allegiance. They’re just that good.
