Detalles: Los pianos abren la obra con una breve introducción que parece sugerir el rugido de los leones, antes de que comience la Marcha Real, con sus toques exóticos en su temática. Gallinas y gallos se muestran tan fieles a la naturaleza como el compositor puede hacerlos, seguidos por burros salvajes de inesperada rapidez, en contraste con las torpes tortugas, que ofrecen un cancán a la velocidad más lenta posible, cometiendo algún error aquí y allá. El elefante está naturalmente representado por el contrabajo en un episodio que incluye una cita directa del inapropiado Ballet de las Sílfides de Berlioz. Los pianos, en solitario, imitan entonces los caprichosos saltos de los canguros, para luego evocar el Acuario. Las personas con orejas largas, los críticos, son retratados por silbatos penetrantes y el rebuzno de los burros, mientras que los pianos y el clarinete traen al cuco, seguido por el resto del aviario, con la ayuda de la flauta. El compositor ruso Serguéi Prokófiev escribió Pedro y el lobo en 1936 para introducir a los niños a los instrumentos de la orquesta. Pedro le dice al pájaro que distraiga al lobo, mientras lo atrapa con una cuerda. Entonces se acercan los cazadores, mostrando sus armas con los tambores, y ayudan a llevar al lobo al zoológico en una gran procesión, con el pato todavía graznando dentro del lobo y el abuelo todavía quejándose.
