    ザ・スペシャルズは、ジェリー・ダマーの象徴的なレーベル、ツー・トーン・レコードと並んで、70年代後半から80年代前半を象徴するバンドの一つです。1977年にコヴェントリー・オートマチックとして結成されたスペシャルズは、ジャマイカのスカとロックステディを融合させ、パンクのエネルギーと融合させ、スカ・リバイバルの火付け役となりました。彼らはまた、マッドネス、ザ・ビート、ザ・セレクターといった志を同じくするバンドのデビュー・シングルのリリースを支援しました。スペシャルズは1979年の夏に「Gangsters」をデビュー・シングルとしてリリースし、その後すぐに「A Message To You Rudy」、「Do Nothing」、「Rat Race」といった名曲を次々と発表しました。 1979年にデビューアルバム『スペシャルズ』をリリースし、1980年には『モア・スペシャルズ』をリリース。この間、バンドは2枚の全英ナンバーワンシングルをリリース。『ザ・スペシャルAKA ライブEP』収録の「トゥー・マッチ・トゥー・ヤング」のライブバージョンと、1981年夏の忘れられない「ゴーストタウン」です。1981年後半にメンバーが脱退した後も、ジェリー・ダマーズはザ・スペシャルAKAとして活動を続け、象徴的なシングル「ネルソン・マンデラ」を含む3枚目のアルバム『イン・ザ・スタジオ』をリリースしました。この20曲入りコンピレーションには、彼らの主要なシングルとアルバムのトラックに加え、プロモーションビデオクリップのDVDコンピレーションが収録されています。
