リプレイスメンツが1981年にTwin/Tone Recordsからリリースしたデビューアルバム『SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH』は、ミネアポリスを拠点とするこのバンドの、揺るぎない天才性と奔放な奔放さという相反する傾向を象徴する作品でした。「Mats」の伝説的な創設メンバーである、リードシンガー／ソングライター兼ギタリストのポール・ウェスターバーグ、ドラマーのクリス・マーズ、そしてボブとトミーのスティンソン兄弟（それぞれリードギターとベース）は、このアルバムで「Takin' A Ride」「Shiftless When Idle」「Customer」といった今や名曲となった曲で、スリリングでダイナミックなサウンドを解き放ちました。

この秋、ザ・リプレイスメンツの結成期を鮮やかに彩る傑作『SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH』発売40周年を記念し、4CD/1LPセットを発売します。100曲のうち67曲は未発表曲で、1980年初頭にレコーディングされた最初のデモ音源や、1981年1月にプロが録音したコンサート音源も含まれています。オリジナル・アルバムの最新リマスター版に加え、バンド結成から18ヶ月の間に制作された未発表ラフミックス、別テイク、デモ音源も多数収録されています。セットに収録されているLP「Deliberate Noise」には、これらの未発表曲を使用したオリジナル・アルバムの別バージョンが収録されています。

『SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH (DELUXE EDITION)』は、数十枚の希少な写真を掲載した12 x 12インチのハードカバーブックに収められています。このセットは、Twin/Tone Recordsの共同設立者であるピーター・ジェスパーソン、Rhinoのジェイソン・ジョーンズ、そしてリプレイスメンツの伝記作家ボブ・メアによって制作されました。メアは、バンドの2019年のボックスセット『Dead Man's Pop』の執筆で最優秀アルバム解説賞を受賞しています。このセットに付属する詳細なライナーノーツもメアが再び執筆し、リプレイスメンツの最新インタビューも収録されています。また、元リプレイスメンツのマネージャーであるジェスパーソンは、『SORRY MA』時代の回想録も提供しています。

このボックスセットは、アルバム未収録のB面曲「If Only You Were Lonely」が追加されたオリジナルアルバムのリマスター版で幕を開ける。続く2枚目のディスク「Raised in the City」には、グループの初期レコーディング（「Try Me」「She's Firm」「Lookin For Ya」）に加え、アルバム収録曲のスタジオデモ（「Shutup」「I Hate Music」など）、アウトテイク（「Shape Up」「Get On The Stick」など）、そしてレアな地下室録音（「Lie About Your Age」「Johnny Fast」）が収録されている。これらのうちいくつかはRhinoから2008年に再発された『Sorry Ma』に収録されているが、今回の新セットには12曲以上が未発表曲として収録されている。

コレクションの3枚目のディスク「Tape's Rolling」に収録されている4つのアウトテイクは、2008年の同再発盤で初公開されたものですが、今回は24曲以上の未発表音源が加わっています。ハイライトには、「Johnny's Gonna Die」と「Love You Till Friday」の衝撃的な別バージョン、「Rattlesnake」と「More Cigarettes」の別ミックス、そしてウェスターバーグの自宅デモ「You're Pretty When You're Rude」と「If Only You Were Lonely」などが収録されています。

デラックス・エディションは、ザ・リプレイスメンツの初期のプロによるライブ音源で最高潮の幕を閉じます。「Unsuitable for Airplay」と題されたこの未発表コンサートは、1981年1月23日、ミネソタ州ミネアポリスの7th St EntryでTwin/Toneのモバイル・ユニットによって収録されました。このコンサートの一部は後に地元のコミュニティ・ラジオ局KFAIで放送されました。

このコンサートは、バンドが『Sorry Ma』の制作の真っ最中に行われた。ショーのセットリストには、デビューアルバムに収録される曲（「Hangin Downtown」「Somethin to Dü」など）の進化版が満載だ。
