Written by Memphis soul legend Charles Chalmers in the mid 60's, "Hurts Me So Much" by Barbara & The Browns on Stax records is the north star of this arousing track. Built off a minor chord 6/8 feel, tremolo guitar and piano rolls counterpoint each other while moody horns are highlighted by gospel tinged background vocals. The story of a love that couldn't be has Kelly singing his woes and pleading about the pain he feels.
