DESCRIPTION
South Korean indie sensation wave to earth return with their second full-length album, [bad pieces]. The "all self-made" band — who have handled everything themselves, from recording, mixing and mastering to artwork and visual direction — arrive here two years after the EP [play with earth! 0.03], and quietly but unmistakably step away from the sound that gave them their viral hits, such as "seasons." Vocalist and guitarist Daniel Kim calls this music "closer to the essence of wave to earth than anything we've made." All three voices ran through the writing process more evenly than ever before, and the band frames that shift not as a decision, but as a place any band eventually arrives at.
[bad pieces] takes its inspiration from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Bed-In protests of 1969. It's an album that makes a single bed its hideout in a messy world. It doesn't offer comfort handed down from above; it starts from a confession: we're clumsy, unlovely pieces too. It has no interest in lecturing or healing. It simply says that staying beside someone is enough to build a shelter of your own.
The sound mirrors that posture. After a long stretch of studying the classic records of the past, the band reached for vintage instruments: nylon-string guitar, Mini Moog bass, and the CP70 piano that anchors the songs' center of gravity. Built on minimalism, the album is the next chapter for a band stepping one pace away from the lo-fi jazz that once defined them.
The pre-release single "heaven and hell" opens the door — a song about a world that can't be split in two, less interested in finding answers than in asking how to live right now. Approaching thirty, the three of them say they "want to grow older without losing the innocence of a child." "courage" leans toward a Lennon/McCartney sensibility, and "hyang" warmly captures the moment someone who thought they understood love comes face to face with the real thing. Every track gathers, in the end, into a single sentence: We'll be here. Come as you are. Courage will find you.
wave to earth have built a global headline touring career unprecedented for a band out of Korea's indie scene, playing more than 100 shows worldwide across 2024 and 2025 and closing out that era with three sold-out nights at Seoul's Olympic Hall in February 2026. This new sound meets an audience for the first time this September on the pieces tour, spanning 29 cities across North America and Asia, including New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The biggest stages of their career, playing their most stripped-back music yet. [bad pieces] is the record of wave to earth turning their questions back on themselves — and setting those questions down, quietly, beside whoever is listening.
